Trust
Trust.
Step up to the edge, toes hanging over the abyss... deep breath... and jump.
Trust.
Get out of bed, put your feet on the floor. They will stick. Trust.
Breath in. Breath out. Trust. We do it everyday. We do it by habit. The air is still breathable. Gravity still works. Car brakes still stop your car... if they do not, I would have your car looked at...
When we dive into the unknown, it's trust that carries us. We do not have all the answers. Most of the time we lack clues, let alone solid, definite conclusions.
Imagine there is a box sitting on your kitchen table. A plain wooden box with nothing inside and no marks on the outside. This box is always there on the table, it never changes. But you know for sure, that someday it will change. There is an undeniable gut feeling that one day that box will hold something inside it. You know it down in your toes. Sometimes it feels like hope and sometimes it is a dead burden of failure. Regardless, you know.
You know that one day that box is going to hold something so precious and special and just for you. You can hardly wait. That box holds something fantastic for your life. You do not know what or how or why or when or who or where but you know it is yours and it is so very important.
It could be a job or a chance, an opportunity. It could be a change or move or disaster. It could be a complete 180 from where you are now. It could be a person, a friend or lover. It could be an ending or a beginning. Whatever that box contains is something you will never forget. You know it will find you.
But now is not the time. The box is still empty. And it is always empty. Every morning and evening, you open it. You hold your breath and swat at that irritating hope. Now is still not the time.
Another day and the box is still empty.
God is never mean but he has a sense of humor. I think of time as God's jester. It keeps him entertained to watch us contend with time. We humans do not comprehend timelessness. God always was, is and will always be. Time cannot effect or change him.
What if his timing is completely dependent on us? When we move to the right place and the “right moment” comes, God moves. He fills the box. He fills us.
Maybe his timing reflects our hearts and the interactions of humans or chains of events? I am certain it depends on our choices, big and small. Very small decisions can effect everything in our daily lives. Being two minutes late for work can save us from being involved in a car accident. Eating at Taco Bell verses McDonald’s will change your day completely. It is mind boggling.
I used an analogy of a box but that box represents prayer. We pray for something and sometimes we do not know what we are praying for but we pray to talk with God. Sometimes we repeat ourselves over and over and it is a wonder God does not silence us – with duct tape.
We wait for God to fill that box or to fulfill our prayers. This is trust. It is blind, boring, and long coming at times. Trust isn't easy and it isn't a magical fix. It's a daily grind.
Trust is hard and most times people won't tell you the hard part.
“Tenor clef is easy.” - for someone that reads only treble clef it may not be easy.
“SLR cameras are so simple, babies can use them.” - if you set the camera on auto, yes, it's simple.
Life doesn't have an auto function. Trust is getting out of bed and saying, “I will live this day to the best of my ability with love and peace.”
Do we make it? Sometimes. Does it work? That depends on your definition of “work.”
Wrong is wrong and right is right, but there is a whole area of gray in the middle. Wading through all that gray takes trust in God's word and promises.
“So if I trust you with this money, I'll get that yacht?”
No.
Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures forever. Psalms 125:1
Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6
Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The LORD, the LORD, is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation." Isaiah 12:2
"Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me.” (Jesus to his Disciples).
